About South Milwaukee, WI

South Milwaukee lies on the western shore of Lake Michigan, about 5 miles south of Milwaukee. It was laid out in 1891, became a village in 1892 and a city in 1897, and it counted 20,795 residents at the 2020 census. The city was planned as an industrial suburb and was long the headquarters of Bucyrus International, known for its giant mining shovels.

Grant Park, part of the Milwaukee County Park System, lies within the city limits. It offers the Oak Leaf bike trail, a swimming beach, an 18-hole golf course and the Seven Bridges Hiking Trail along the shore. A trip to the beach or the golf course is a lot more pleasant in a car that starts every time. Regular maintenance keeps those weekend drives worry-free.
